When you’re juggling work, family, household, dealing with health issues and many other things in your life, making time for yourself usually gets sacrificed. Or if you manage to take time out, you can feel guilty about it.
We had a good chat about this around our table at our Coffee and Conversation in Livingston this morning.
For me, getting to the regular West Lothian Women in Business networking is one of the ways I can take time out for me and my business at once. OK, it’s not on the same level as getting a massage or a night out….but it’s something I’ve made a habit of slotting into the working month. Our group isn’t about selling; there’s no stressful stand-up-and-make-your-pitch element. It’s about meeting other women who live and/or work in West Lothian, sharing battle stories, making connections, supporting each other, getting ideas. Maybe some of that turns into working together, or referrals, but the main raison d’etre of the group is to support each other in business or employment, which includes how our work balances with our personal lives.
This has been a recurring theme for me this week, as I was also at a Digital Women Scotland event in Falkirk, and the host opened the event by saying, “You’re here today because you’re doing something for yourselves.” I’d never really thought of it like that; networking and events related to business are “work.” But when it’s a support-group, or workshop for improving yourself and your skills, maybe it’s a way of having guilt-free “me-time” during the day, when you’re not answering work emails or calls but you’re working on you in a way that will have a positive impact on your business too.
The West Lothian Women in Business monthly Coffee and Conversation takes place at Dobbies in Livingston at 9.30am (time to get back from the school run) on the last Thursday of most months, except when we have an event or workshop instead.
The last Thursday in October (25th October) will be a workshop taking place at the Hilcroft Hotel in Whitburn. The theme is “How to Connect to Collaborate to Build your Business.” We hope to see you there!
